You don't have to be wearing a silk smoking jacket to relax and enjoy using Galison's Mandarin Bloom Desk Address Book. The silver floral pattern on a deep blue ground of the hard binder covers combines with the carnelian-colored cloth binding for dramatic effect. Each alphabetic tab page shows features a different pattern in dramatic color combinations as well as a Chinese proverb or quotation from a Chinese writer.
A quotation from the 6th century B.C. philosopher Lao Tzu gives good advice for organizing your correspondence with this address book: "Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy."
The patterns are borrowed from textile patterns from a 10-volume set of rare books, Shokubun ruisan, (volumes devoted to the art of weaving) compiled by the Imperial Household Museum in Tokyo and issued in 1893. The books are housed in the Art Reference Library of the Brooklyn Museum.
